Shylock was swiftly followed by Richard from Shakespeare’s\nhistories Richard the Third. By playing these two roles he has made a name in London.\nHowever to be able to keep performing on a big London stage Kean had to continue producing\nsuccessful reviews in each of the roles he will perform in front of London theatre critics and\naudiences. His attempt in securing the lead position was clear in the choice of roles he would\nperform after Shylock and Richard : which was Hamlet. Hamlet is still considered as a role that\nshows the actor’s true ability in acting. And Kean’s attempt in playing Hamlet was a miserable\nfailure: especially in the eye of the theatre critics, although frocks of audiences gathered to the\ntheatre. But they were there to see Kean not Hamlet. And to make up for that failure he chose\nanother role that he thought would revive his assessment as an actor which was Othello. Yet\nOthello and Hamlet is a character with somewhat shared qualities and the result was as\nexpected. To revive his two failed attempts Kean’s next choice of character was Iago from\nOthello. In choosing a character that has shared qualities with Shylock and Richard of course\nbrought success which was easily granted. Yet by playing a similar role showed Kean’s limited\nquality as an actor which would have been taken as a risk if he wanted to keep his position as\nan leading London actor.
