These theories are identified first as a reaction against the behavioristic learning theory of audiolingualism. Approaches to syllabus design based on both the \"weak\" version of communicative language teaching-learning to use the second language-and the \"strong\" version-using the second language to learn it-are examined. The application of cognitive theory to second language acquisition theory is dealt with.
