In both fetuses and adults, NCAM-immunoreactivity was found in the epithelial cells of the lenses, with expression decreasing toward the bow area. These results suggest that NCAM is lost from the cell surfaces as the epithelial cells differentiate into elongating fiber cells. We have further revealed that lens epithelial NCAM is more highly polysialylated in postnatal rats than in fetal rats.
