The texts of Eliot's novels cited in this paper are from the Oxford and Penguin Classics series. Metaphorical thought in this paper will include any figures of speech which compare two or more unlike things; it is not an aim of this paper to classify or categorize her use of different metaphorical rhetorical devices. The choice of the novels to be surveyed is not an arbitrary one: Adam Bede was her most fully realized early work and Daniel Deronda, her last novel, can be seen as the culmination of her literary career. By looking at her use of metaphorical language and the employment of metaphorical thinking throughout her writing, it is hoped a better understanding of her, as an author and moral teacher, will emerge. \"...intelligence so rarely shows itself in speech without metaphor... we can so seldom declare what a thing is, except by saying it is something else.\" George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss \"...the hum of insects, like tiniest bells on the garment of silence.\" The Mill on the Floss","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_15":{"attribute_name":"表示順","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"18","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_description_16":{"attribute_name":"アクセション番号","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"KJ00004035241","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.18998/00000904","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_3_source_id_1":{"attribute_name":"雑誌書誌ID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10460219","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_3_title_3":{"attribute_name":"論文名よみ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Metaphorical Thought in George Eliot's Novels"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"JONES, J.
