The Japanese GITAIGO is often regarded as a synonym of onomatopoeia. However, it is greatly different from onomatopoeia in that some GITAIGO words are generated from many scenes where there is no auditory information such as sound or voice. They can symbolically represent actions, natural phenomena, emotions, senses, and so forth. Their syntactic behaviors are diversified. Some words can work as nouns and adjectival nouns as well as adverbs, while some others make verbs in combination with the "-suru" verb. Some words can generate adjectives, nouns, and verbs in combination with a prefix or a suffix. This paper aims at demonstrating the syntactic behaviors of Japanese GITAIGO by showing examples. |
