I will discuss the word`that'in this article, which functions as a pronoun, a relative clause marker, and a complementizer. I will also verify several types of comlementizers, the behavior of which depends on the environment in which complementizers are used; the complement of bridge verbs, non-bridge verbs, and factive verbs, respectively. I will propose here that`that'function as a marker which introduces old information or non focused elements, and that extraction of wh-words out of such elements degrads the grammaticality of a sentence. |
