The National Women's Trade Union League was founded in 1903 to organize female workers into trade unions. The League was a structually unique organization as its membership were trade unionists and allies-wealthy women disenchanted with conventional philanthropic and reform activities. In spite of their different motivations to join the League, the ideal of "sisterhood" made their cooperation possible. The NWTUL strove to organize female workers through publicity and educational activities. That is, publicity and educational activities were the means used to achieve the purpose of organizing. When the League encountered certain difficulties and met with little success, it soon shifted its chief strategy from the work of unionaizing to publicity and educational activities. This shift meant that allies' influence among the League became greater and the ideal of "sisterhood" collapsed at the same time. |
