Under President Assad's rule, Syria has enjoyed a long period of stability, althogh there have been some difficulties ; the confrontation with Israel, the fall of the Soviet Union, and a huge financial debt incurred from foreign military purchases are among the problems Syria has faced. This stability is further threatened by recent signs of political discord and grievance among the people. This discontent is linked to the aging President and the increasing corruption among the ruling class. While the political situation is a cause of some concern, instability also comes from the economic situation in Syria. The government, under pressure to make the economy more efficient and calls for financial austerity, has reluctantly tried to open the economy in various ways. However, the benefits of this opening have been enjoyed primarily by a small number of political elites, thus further widening the gap between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots. In today's world, economic liberalization is a must for all developing nations ; however, traditional economies which have recently adopted Capitalism face special problems. This paper explores the problems of economic liberalization in Syria from a new approach--one that considers the traditional economy as a key to understanding contemporary Syrian economic liberalization. |
