More than a year and a half years have passed since George Bush, the Republican candidate, won the American presidential election of 2000. The purpose of this essay is to point out some of the factors and trends that influenced that election. This is important because presidential elections have mirrored various aspects of American society throughout the years. The following three points are noteworthy in the election. First is a problem concerning with belief systems, such as ethics and morals. It was in the election that all candidates used this issue as one of the chief campaign points. As social background, for example, there was the "Clinton scandal" and the issue of violence in schools ---especially the school shootings in Colorado and other places. Second, increasingly independent voters have had a large influence on the two-party system in politics. The so-called "McCain phenomenon," which was produced by independent voters made both Bush and Gore actively seek the votes of independents. This last was further facilitated by the internet. Since most households and workplaces in America have computers, we can expect these independent voters to further influence elections, especially in the early stages of future campaigns. This trend will probably be of greater and greater influence in coming presidential campaigns. |
