After quickly reviewing the sex/gender system of the West and Judith Butler's theory that stress the performative work of gender/sexuality, this note refers Mark Johnson's new ethnography of the transvestites in the Southern Philippines. More recently transegenderally identified men (gay/bantut) have emerged as creative producers of an image of beauty defined in terms of an imagined American otherness. Johnson explore the relation between the collective endowment of gay/bantut as purveyors of beauty and their symbolic valorization as impotent men and unreproductive/defiling women. |
