The U.S. Bureau of the census in 2000 reported that the population of Hispanics exceeded the Black population for the first time in U.S. history. Blacks had been numerically the biggest ethnic group except for whites. The aims of this paper are the following : First, to see how 'Latinos'-they prefer the name to the term 'Hispanic'-see themselves and their heritage. Second, to explain why they have been migrating, both legally and illegally, to the U.S. since late 1960s. Third, to make clear how the U.S. has treated Hispanics through its immigration policies. And lastly, this paper will consider how the people Hispanics are treated in U.S. society. This should lead us to reconsider the gap between the American ideal of "E Pluribus Unum" ('out of many, one') and the reality of modern American society. |
