Chomsky (2000) assumes that CP and vP are phases because they are propositional. Under this assumption, derivations proceed with multiple spell out; once syntactic elements merge into propositional, it must be spelled out into PF component. The phases once spelled out are invisible, so that the moved words or phrases should rise into the edge of phase, that is, Spec of CP or vP. That is why Last Resort or motivation for movement is very important notion in generative grammar. What is the motivation for movement to the vP? In this article I verify an EPP feature, which is assumed to be a motivation for a movement and to attract syntactic elements into its Spec position. Analyzing contraction forms between subject and verb, and pseudo-gapping in English, I conclude that there is weak empirical evidence to support EPP features in vP, while other languages like French and others from Northern Europe show that vP Specs are used to host long distance movement. |
