The present paper, as the primary fascicle, presents firstly the list of our informants, secondly our fieldwork guidelines, and finally some handouts used for fieldworkers in class which were intended to make the guidelines above more effective. The present report concerns the survey of Chiba areas ((2) on the map) facing the Kanagawa ones ((1) on the map) across Tokyo Bay. That region of Chiba ((2)) borders on the southernmost parts of the 'Boso' Peninsula (the horizontally shaded part on the map). The dialect atlas of the latter was already published by the late Prof. W. A. Grootaers and the present writer in 1984. 'Boso' is the old name for Chiba. Accordingly, it is a matter of course that we should get interested in how linguistically related the Chiba region ((2)) will be to Kanagawa ((1)) on one hand, and how distinct it will be from the southernmost 'Boso' (shaded part) on the other. We should also be curious as to what role Tokyo Bay has played in the process of dialect diffusion between Chiba and Kanagawa Prefs. These studies make an important contribution to dialectology. I will begin to present our results in the next fascicle. My profound gratitude goes to all the people who kindly cooperated with us in any stage of our survey. |
